H O U S E   R E S O L U T I O N
PROCLAIMING APRIL 5, 2018, TO BE "NATIONAL SERVICE RECOGNITION DAY" IN THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND

     WHEREAS, Service to others is a hallmark of American character and central to how we
meet our challenges; and
     WHEREAS, The nation's towns and cities are increasingly turning to national service and
volunteerism as a cost-effective strategy to meet their needs; and
     WHEREAS, Foster Grandparent Volunteers address the most pressing challenges facing
our communities, mentoring students for the jobs of the 21st century; and
     WHEREAS, National service expands economic opportunity by creating sustainable,
resilient communities and providing education and nurturing skills to our children in schools and
daycare centers; and
     WHEREAS, Foster Grandparent Volunteers serve in 25 sites within West Warwick,
Coventry, Warwick, Cranston, North Smithfield, and Woonsocket. Fifty-five volunteers bolster
the civic, neighborhood and faith-based organizations that are so vital to our economic and social
well-being; and
     WHEREAS, National service represents a unique public-private partnership that invests
in community solutions and leverages non-federal resources to strengthen community impact and
increase the return to taxpayer dollars; and
     WHEREAS, The Corporation for National and Community Service shares a priority with
local leaders nationwide to engage citizens, improve lives and strengthen communities, and is
joining with the National League of Cities, the National Association of Counties, the Cities of
Service, and local leaders across the country in support of National Service Recognition Day on
April 5, 2018; now, therefore be it
     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and
Providence Plantations hereby proclaims April 5, 2018, to be "National Service Recognition Day"
in the State of Rhode Island and encourages residents to recognize the positive impact of national
service within our communities and to thank those who serve and find ways to give back to their
communities; and be it further
     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to
transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Ms. Diane Richardson, Director of the Foster
Grandparent Program in West Warwick.
