S E N A T E   R E S O L U T I O N
JOYOUSLY CELEBRATING THE 100TH ANNIVERSARY OF HOLY CROSS PARISH IN CENTRAL FALLS

     WHEREAS, Holy Cross Parish in Central Falls, is a member of the Polish National
Catholic Church. Its first organizational meeting occurred on December 19, 1917, under the
spiritual guidance and leadership provided by Reverend. R.L. Zawistowski, the church’s first
Pastor. The first Parish Mass was celebrated on February 17, 1918, and the parish community
moved into their church at 320 High Street in Central Falls in May of 1919; and
     WHEREAS, In the beginning, only the first story of the church was completed and was
partitioned into three sections, a worship space, an auditorium, and a kitchen. In 1935, the second
story of church building was completed, and in 1949, the interior of the church itself was
completed. All of the renovations and additions were much needed to help the parish serve the
needs of its growing and thriving parish community; and
     WHEREAS, For the last 100 years, Holy Cross Parish has been a vital and integral part
of the Central Falls community. In addition to offering the Holy Sacrifice of Mass and other
worship services, marrying people, baptizing children and comforting the sick and dying, Holy
Cross Parish is also committed to making a difference within the community and bringing God’s
love and blessings to all in need of a helping hand. Some of their charitable endeavors include
Operation Christmas Child, collecting and distributing Thanksgiving baskets, a winter clothing
drive, a Souper Bowl of Caring outreach program, and a 40 days-40 items program to help the
needy; and
     WHEREAS, Holy Cross Parish has been especially blessed through the years by having
an abundance of dedicated parishioners. In particular, the parish has a very active ladies society
and a vibrant youth community involved in numerous activities at the local, diocesan and national
levels. Holy Cross Parish has hosted many seniorate, diocesan and national church events and, in
1995, had the honor of hosting the opening Mass at the General Convention for its sister
organization, the Polish National Union of America; now, therefore be it
     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations
hereby joyously celebrates the 100th Anniversary of Holy Cross Parish in Central Falls; and be it
further
     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to
transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Father Robert Nemkovich, Pastor, Holy Cross
Parish, Central Falls.
