S E N A T E   R E S O L U T I O N
PROCLAIMING APRIL 10, 2019, TO BE "LEAGUE OF WOMEN VOTERS OF RHODE ISLAND 100TH ANNIVERSARY DAY"

     WHEREAS, The League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan organization that encourages
the informed and active participation of citizens in government, works to increase understanding
of major public policy issues, and influences public policy through education and advocacy; and
     WHEREAS, Carrie Chapman Catt, the President of the National Woman Suffrage
Association, proposed the National League of Women Voters as a department of the National
Woman Suffrage Association at their convention in St. Louis, Missouri, on March 19, 1919, a
year before the 19th Amendment was passed; and
     WHEREAS, A state charter was secured for the League of Women Voters of Rhode
Island State Division by the Rhode Island Equal Suffrage Association on April 1, 1919; and
     WHEREAS, A state charter was secured for the League of Women Voters of Providence
by the Rhode Island Suffrage Party April 9, 1919; and
     WHEREAS, For 100 years, the League of Women Voters of Rhode Island and the
League of Women Voters of Providence have collaborated with other organizations to increase
civil participation and achieve mutual goals such as fair elections, open government, campaign
finance reform, quality schools and libraries, women’s rights, and environmental issues; now,
therefore be it
     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations
hereby congratulates the League of Women Voters of Rhode Island and the League of Women
Voters of Providence, as well as the League of Women Voters of Newport County, the League of
Women Voters of South County, and the League of Women Voters Members-at-Large, on the
occasion of their 100th Anniversary; and be it further
     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode and Providence Plantations hereby
proclaims April 10, 2019, as “League of Women Voters of Rhode Island 100th Anniversary
Day”; and be it further
     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to
transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Ms. Jane Koster, President of the Rhode Island
League of Women Voters.
