H O U S E   R E S O L U T I O N
PROCLAIMING THE MONTH OF MAY TO BE "MOTORCYCLE AWARENESS MONTH" IN THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND AND URGING ALL RHODE ISLAND MOTORISTS TO AVOID DISTRACTED DRIVING

     WHEREAS, Approximately 8.4 million motorcycles are registered in the United States
and there are approximately 33,000 motorcycles registered in Rhode Island. Motorcycle riding is
a popular form of transportation enjoyed by about five percent of the American people and they
travel approximately 21 million miles each year; and
     WHEREAS, Motorcycles provide a more efficient mode of transportation than cars or
trucks. Motorcycles use up fewer resources, cause less wear and tear on our roads and highways,
and increase available parking spaces; and
     WHEREAS, Unfortunately, distracted driving poses grave dangers to other motorists,
especially motorcyclists. Distractions can be any activity that takes a drivers focus off the task of
driving, including eating and drinking, talking or texting on the phone, and numerous other
distractions, all of which pose serious dangers to the motorcycle driving public. In 2016, 3,450
lives were lost due to incidents involving distracted driving, and 391,000 people were injured in
crashes that involved distracted driving; now, therefore be it
     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and
Providence Plantations hereby proclaims the Month of May to be "Motorcycle Awareness
Month" in the State of Rhode Island; and be it further
     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to
transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Mr. Paul Bond, President of the Rhode Island
Motorcycle Association.
