S E N A T E   R E S O L U T I O N
CELEBRATING THE DELECTABLE 2019 "GREAT RUMFORD BAKE OFF" HELD ON MAY 12, 2019, AND THE 160TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE CREATION OF RUMFORD BAKING POWDER

     WHEREAS, The Rumford Chemical Company, owned by Eben Horsford and George
Wilson, moved in 1856 to what was then Seekonk, Massachusetts, and later became East
Providence, Rhode Island, in 1862. At the time, Mr. Horford occupied "The Rumford Chair of the
Application of Science To Useful Arts" at Harvard University, hence the name of the company he
co-owned; and
     WHEREAS, In 1859, Mr. Horsford invented the first double-acting baking powder,
which revolutionized the baking process. For many years, his company would hold a "Rumford
Bake Off" on the company grounds, with bakers making their favorite food recipes using
Rumford Baking Powder. The company remained successful and under the same name until
1948, when it was sold to Hulman and Company of Indiana and moved to Terre Haute; and
     WHEREAS, The East Providence Historical Society is bringing back the tradition of the
"Rumford Bake Off" on May 12, 2019. The bake off will have an Adult Division open to those
aged 18 and older and a Junior Division open to those aged 9 to 17. Contestants must make all of
their goods in a home kitchen and must include their recipe or ingredient list. All recipes must
include Rumford Baking Powder and the contestants may bake cakes, cookies and dessert bars,
cake type breads, scones, and dessert type biscuits and muffins; and
     WHEREAS, The winner of the Adult Division will receive a $200 prize and the winner
of the Junior Division will receive a $100 prize. The second and third place finishers in both
divisions will receive a ribbon and a gift certificate; now, therefore be it
     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations
hereby celebrates the 2019 Great Rumford Bake off and the 160th Anniversary of the creation of
Rumford Baking Powder. We furthermore wish everyone a delicious time at the Bake Off on
May 12, 2019, and wish all contestants good luck in the competition; and be it further
     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to
transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to the East Providence Historical Society.
