RECOGNIZING AND SUPPORTING THE "CHOOSING WISELY CAMPAIGN" ON MAY 21, 2019, AND DECLARING THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND TO BE A "CHOOSING WISELY STATE" |

WHEREAS, The goal of the Choosing Wisely Campaign is to promote conversations |
between physicians and patients about unnecessary care and thereby reduce wasteful spending of |
health care dollars on unnecessary tests, treatments, and procedures in the health care system; and |
WHEREAS, Choosing Wisely is a national effort led by the American Board of Internal |
Medicine Foundation garnering the participation of over 80 medical specialty societies who have |
published more than 550 recommendations of overused tests, treatments, and procedures that |
clinicians and patients should discuss; and |
WHEREAS, An informed and educated patient can feel empowered to ask questions |
about his or her health, including alternatives for pain medication, surgeries, and other medical |
care; and |
WHEREAS, The medical community recognizes the importance of having an open |
dialogue with their patients on the benefit and risks of medicines, tests and procedures; and |
WHEREAS, The Choosing Wisely Rhode Island Campaign, sponsored by the Rhode |
Island Business Group on Health and the Rhode Island Foundation, has brought together a broad |
coalition of stakeholders, including physicians/clinicians, patients, community advocates, and |
government and business leaders who are working together to benefit present and future |
generations of Rhode Islanders; now, therefore be it |
RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations |
hereby recognizes and supports the Choosing Wisely Rhode Island Campaign and encourages |
statewide implementation by all stakeholders; and be it further |
RESOLVED, That this Senate hereby proclaims Rhode Island to be a "Choosing Wisely |
State"; and be it further |
RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to |
transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to Paul Martineau, Chairman of the Board, Rhode |
Island Business Group on Health, and Neil D. Steinberg, President and CEO, the Rhode Island |
Foundation. |
