S E N A T E   R E S O L U T I O N
ADOPTION OF THE STATE PLAN ON ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE AND RELATED DISORDERS

     WHEREAS, Alzheimer's disease is a fatal, degenerative disease of the brain that impairs
cognitive function, memory, and behavior; and
     WHEREAS, Alzheimer's disease is not part of the normal aging process; and
     WHEREAS, Alzheimer's disease is the sixth leading cause of death in the United States
and the fifth leading cause of death for those over 65 years of age; and
     WHEREAS, Alzheimer's disease is the only leading cause of death that cannot be
prevented, cured, or even slowed; and
     WHEREAS, An estimated 5.7 million people nationwide have Alzheimer's disease,
including 200,000 individuals under the age of 65; and
     WHEREAS, Rhode Island is projected to have 27,000 individuals with Alzheimer's
disease by 2025; and
     WHEREAS, The General Assembly affirmed the need for a state plan for Alzheimer's
disease and related disorders and directed the Long-Term Care Coordinating Council to convene
an Alzheimer's disease and related disorders working group (hereafter "working group"), by Joint
Resolution during the January Session, A.D. 2012; and
     WHEREAS, The working group transmitted to the Governor and to the General
Assembly a state plan for Alzheimer's disease and related disorders in 2013; and
     WHEREAS, The working group has commissioned a five year update regarding the
important developments in the area of Alzheimer's disease and related disorders; now, therefore
be it
     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations
hereby recognizes that people with Alzheimer's disease or related disorders and their families
must have all of the information and support they need and services delivered as effectively and
efficiently as possible; and be it further
     RESOLVED, That this Senate hereby supports the five year update to the state for
Alzheimer's disease and related disorders in the State of Rhode Island as developed by the
working group; and be it further
     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to
transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to the Honorable Gina Raimondo, Governor of the
State of Rhode Island.
