S E N A T E   R E S O L U T I O N
CELEBRATING THE 200TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE TIVERTON UNION PUBLIC LIBRARY

     WHEREAS, The first meeting to establish what is now known as the Tiverton Union
Public Library was held on March 24, 1820, when a dedicated group of young men convened
with the noble purpose of founding a social library, which was to be named the Union Society;
and
     WHEREAS, Over the ensuing years, the location and name of the library changed a
number of times until the year 1896, when space was rented in a circa 1868 building located in
Tiverton's historic Four Corners District; and
     WHEREAS, In 1914, through the generosity of the Pocasset Lodge of the Independent
Order of the Good Templars, the building was purchased by the library for one dollar, giving the
Tiverton Union Public Library its permanent home; and
     WHEREAS, As an official branch of the Tiverton Library Services, the Union Public
Library provides excellent customer service and assistance through the service of professional
staff and technical assistance provided through its affiliation with the Tiverton Library Services;
and
     WHEREAS, In addition, the library's building and grounds are maintained and funded
through the Union Public Library Association (UPLA) and are fully supported by the benevolent
efforts of local volunteers who help people of all ages to discover a world of knowledge through
various programs and events; and
     WHEREAS, The Union Public Library has helped to build a brighter and more enriching
and rewarding future for all who pass through its doors, and has ultimately enhanced the
economic vitality of our state; now, therefore be it
     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations
hereby joins with the Tiverton Union Public Library's many friends in celebrating the 200th
Anniversary of the second oldest library in Newport County. We furthermore encourage all the
residents of Tiverton to visit the library to take advantage of the wonderful resources available,
and to thank their librarians and library workers for making information accessible to all; and be
it further
     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to
transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Gayle Lawrence, President of the Union Public
Library Association.
