PROCLAIMING THE WEEK OF FEBRUARY 1-5, 2021, TO BE "NATIONAL SCHOOL COUNSELING WEEK" IN THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND

Introduced By: Representatives Vella-Wilkinson, Noret, Kazarian, Ackerman, Azzinaro, Baginski, Shekarchi, Blazejewski, and Shanley

Date Introduced: February 04, 2021

WHEREAS, School Counselors across the United States, in both public and private
schools, work tirelessly to help students reach their full potential; and
WHEREAS, In consultation with parents and teachers, School Counselors work with
students and assist them as they explore their strengths and weaknesses, their talents, ideas,
values and interests, and as they chart a path towards a successful and prosperous future; and
WHEREAS, School Counselors also identify and seek out school and community
resources that will assist students in their endeavor to discover who they are and who they desire
to become as adults; and
WHEREAS, A 2013 study by the College Board calculated that adding just one
counselor to a high school staff produces a ten percent increase in the school's college enrollment
numbers. A report by the National Association for College Admission Counseling determined
that meeting one-on-one with a counselor to discuss financial aid for college tripled a student's
chances of attending college, and made it significantly more likely that they would actually apply
for financial aid; now, therefore be it
RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and
Providence Plantations hereby proclaims the week of February 1-5, 2021, to be "National School
Counseling Week" in the State of Rhode Island; and be it further
RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to
transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Ms. Jill Cook, CAE, Executive Director,
American School Counselor Association.
