Introduced By: Representatives Bennett, Shekarchi, Blazejewski, Chippendale, Nardone, S Lima, Edwards, Shallcross Smith, Solomon, and Kennedy

Date Introduced: May 04, 2021

WHEREAS, Approximately 8.3 million motorcycles are registered in the United States
and there are approximately 24,175 motorcycles registered in Rhode Island. Motorcycle riding is
a popular form of transportation enjoyed by almost twelve percent of the American people; and
WHEREAS, Motorcycles provide a more efficient mode of transportation than cars or
trucks. Motorcycles use up fewer resources, cause less wear and tear on our roads and highways,
and increase available parking spaces; and
WHEREAS, Unfortunately, distracted driving poses grave dangers to other motorists,
especially motorcyclists. Distractions can be any activity that takes a driver's focus off the task of
driving, including eating and drinking, talking or texting on the phone, and numerous other
distractions, all of which pose serious dangers to the motorcycle driving public. In 2018, more
than 2,800 lives were lost due to incidents involving distracted driving, and 400,000 people were
injured in crashes that involved distracted driving; now, therefore be it
RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island hereby
proclaims May of 2021 to be "Motorcycle Awareness Month" in the State of Rhode Island; and
be it further
RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to
transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Mr. Paul Bond, President of the Rhode Island
