S E N A T E   R E S O L U T I O N
PROCLAIMING SEPTEMBER 1ST THROUGH SEPTEMBER 7TH, 2021 TO BE "OVARIAN CANCER AWARENESS WEEK" IN THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND

     WHEREAS, Ovarian Cancer Awareness Week is an opportunity to underscore our
commitment to fighting ovarian cancer and to finding a cure for this deadly disease; and
     WHEREAS, Ovarian cancer is the eighth most common cancer and the fifth leading
cause of cancer deaths in Rhode Island; and
     WHEREAS, Seventy or more new cases are likely to be diagnosed in Rhode Island in
2021; and
     WHEREAS, All people born with ovaries are at risk for ovarian cancer; and
     WHEREAS, Currently, there is no simple and reliable way to test for ovarian cancer
without symptoms; and
     WHEREAS, Advocacy, increased awareness, and genetic testing and counseling can
result in a meaningful reduction in the incidence of ovarian cancer; and
     WHEREAS, Members of the Partnership to Reduce Cancer in Rhode Island, the Rhode
Island Ovarian Cancer Alliance and the Program in Women's Oncology at Women & Infants
Hospital, the Hospital Association of Rhode Island, and the Rhode Island Department of Health's
Comprehensive Cancer Control Program are working collaboratively to reduce the burden of
ovarian cancer in Rhode Island; now, therefore be it
     RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island hereby proclaims September
1st through September 7th, 2021, to be "Ovarian Cancer Awareness Week", encourages all the
State's residents to learn more about the prevention and early detection of ovarian cancer; and be
it further
     RESOLVED, That this Senate hereby recognizes the dedicated medical professionals and
researchers whose tireless efforts help provide a brighter and healthier future for women; and be
it further
     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to
transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to The Partnership to Reduce Cancer in Rhode
Island, the Rhode Island Ovarian Cancer Alliance, the Program in Women's Oncology at Women
& Infants Hospital, the Hospital Association of Rhode Island, and the Rhode Island Department
of Health's Comprehensive Cancer Control Program.
