H O U S E   R E S O L U T I O N
CELEBRATING APRIL OF 2022, AS "LIMB LOSS AND LIMB DIFFERENCE AWARENESS MONTH (LLLDAM)" IN THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND

     WHEREAS, Limb Loss and Limb Difference Awareness Month is celebrated around the
globe as a time to recognize those living with limb loss and similar challenges and to highlight
the vital need to support efforts that advance equitable medical access, care, and coverage; and
     WHEREAS, Nearly two million people living in the United States have experienced limb
loss, according to the Amputee Coalition, and by 2050, it is estimated that a staggering 3.6
million people will be living with limb loss; and
     WHEREAS, The Amputee Coalition is the nation's leading organization on limb loss and
is dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for amputees and their families, improving patient
care, and preventing limb loss. The Coalition's theme for this year's LLLDAM is "Ordinary is
Extraordinary"; and
     WHEREAS, The most common reasons for limb amputation include severe injury, a
cancerous tumor in the bone or muscle of the limb, a serious infection that does not get better
with antibiotics or other treatment, thickening of nerve tissue, called a neuroma, and frostbite; and
     WHEREAS, There are many different causes of congenital limb differences – some are
genetic, some are due to environmental or pharmaceutical factors, others may be because of an
isolated issue or syndrome occurring during fetal development; and
     WHEREAS, Limb Loss and Limb Difference Awareness Month provides an opportunity
to educate the populace and empower and support individuals within our communities by sharing
the realities of living with limb loss and limb differences; now, therefore be it
     RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island hereby
proclaims April of 2022, to be "Limb Loss and Limb Difference Awareness Month" and urges the
citizens of the state to learn about and help to alleviate the obstacles that people living with limb
loss and/or limb difference must overcome to reclaim their lives; and be it further
     RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to
transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to the Rhode Island – The Amputee Coalition.
