H O U S E   R E S O L U T I O N
PROCLAIMING APRIL 28, 2022, TO BE "WORKERS' MEMORIAL DAY" IN THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND

Introduced By: Representatives Morales, Shekarchi, Blazejewski, Filippi, McEntee, Tanzi, Shallcross Smith, Fogarty, Alzate, and Bennett

Date Introduced: April 28, 2022

WHEREAS, Workers' Memorial Day takes place each year across the globe on April 28
as a day of remembrance for workers killed, disabled or injured while performing their work
duties, and serves as a call for action to do everything possible to protect the safety and well-
being of workers and mitigate the possibility of on-the-job injury; and
WHEREAS, In 1989, the AFL-CIO declared April 28 to be "Workers' Memorial Day" in
honor, recognition and remembrance of the thousands of working people who are killed or
injured on the job every year. This date was chosen because it is the day in 1970 when the
Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970 went into effect and promised that every worker has
a fundamental human right to a safe job and working environment; and
WHEREAS, The COVID-19 pandemic devastated working families and has highlighted
just how important safe jobs and working conditions are to every American, Rhode Islander, and
human being regardless of where they live and work; and
WHEREAS, The United Nations has recognized Workers' Memorial Day and it is also
recognized as a national day in many countries including the United States, as well as Australia,
Argentina, Belgium, Bermuda, Brazil, Canada, Dominican Republic, Ireland, Panama, Peru,
Portugal, Spain, Thailand, the United Kingdom, and other nations; now, therefore be it
RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island hereby
proclaims April 28, 2022, to be "Workers' Memorial Day" in the State of Rhode Island; and be it
further
RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and hereby is authorized and directed to
transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to the Honorable Governor of the State of Rhode
Island, Daniel J. McKee, and the Rhode Island AFL-CIO President George Nee.
