A N   A C T

RELATING TO TOWNS AND CITIES -- RETIREMENT OF MUNICIPAL EMPLOYEES

It is enacted by the General Assembly as follows:

SECTION 1. Chapter 45-21 of the General Laws entitled "Retirement of Municipal Employees" is hereby amended by adding thereto the following section:

{ADD 45-21-63. Health insurance-coverage of retired municipal employees. -- ADD} {ADD Any retired member of the municipal employees retirement system with a pension sufficient to pay premiums shall be entitled to purchase individual health insurance benefits out of the retiree's pension payroll, as long as the health insurance is from a company either subject to chapters 27-19 and 27-20, or licensed pursuant to chapter 27-41. If the municipal retiree desires, the retiree shall also be permitted to purchase coverage for his or her dependents. In any case, it is the responsibility of the retiree to obtain such health insurance and present proof of such insurance to the retirement system, which shall establish such rules and regulations as are reasonably necessary to carry out this section of law. Retirees purchasing health insurance under this section shall pay the full cost for such health insurance. ADD}

SECTION 2. This act shall take effect upon passage.
