It is enacted by the General Assembly as follows:
SECTION 1. Chapter 16-9 of the General Laws entitled "School Funds and Property" is hereby amended by adding thereto the following section:
{ADD 16-9-4.1. New school construction -- Regulations for Technology requirements. --ADD} {ADD The Department of Elementary and Secondary Education is hereby instructed to develop regulations by January 1, 1999 to ensure that any city, town or district which undertakes "new school construction" as defined herein, provides in the planning for necessary wiring which is consistent with current standards for computer networking technology in schools. ADD}
{ADD For the purposes of this section "new school construction" shall mean: (1) any new school buildings, (2) additions of any new classrooms to existing school buildings.ADD}
SECTION 2. This act shall take effect upon passage.
