It is enacted by the General Assembly as follows:
SECTION 1. Section 42-28-12 of the general laws shall not apply to the payment by the city of Woonsocket for the assignment of a member of the Rhode Island state police to serve temporarily as chief of police of the city of Woonsocket during the calendar year 1997. The member of the Rhode Island state police so assigned to serve temporarily as chief of police of the city of Woonsocket shall be paid by the state of Rhode Island and continue to receive the same benefits as he would have received had he not been assigned to the city of Woonsocket.
SECTION 2. This act shall take effect upon passage and shall have retroactive effect to January 1, 1997.
