H O U S E R E S O L U T I O N
PROCLAIMING MAY 6, 2000 AS "NATIONAL DAY OF HEARING TESTING" THROUGHOUT THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND
WHEREAS, Hearing loss affects an estimated 28 million people in the United States, but too often the hearing loss goes undiagnosed or ignored; and
WHEREAS, Technological, medical, and policy advances have greatly improved the ability of people to cope with hearing loss; and
WHEREAS, Hearing loss when neglected has severe adverse consequences that can affect the mental, emotional and physical well-being of hard of hearing people and their loved ones; and
WHEREAS, As part of its 20th anniversary celebration, Self Help for Hard of Hearing People, Inc. (SHHH), the nation's largest organization representing hard of hearing people, has proclaimed Saturday, May 6, 2000 to be the "National Day of Hearing Testing"; and
WHEREAS, The National Day of Hearing Testing is supported by prominent Americans and leading organizations representing professionals in the field of hearing loss; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That the Rhode Island House of Representatives hereby proclaims May 6, 2000 as the "National Day of Hearing Testing" throughout the State of Rhode Island; and be it further
RESOLVED, That the Rhode Island House of Representatives urges all Rhode Island citizens to have their hearing tested or screened; and be it further
RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to the SHHH Sargent Chapter, the Rhode Island Speech-Language Hearing Association, the Commission on Deaf and Hard of Hearing, University of Rhode Island Speech-Hearing Clinic, and the Rhode Island College Department of Communications.
