MEMORIALIZING CONGRESS TO HAVE THE POSTAL SERVICE ISSUE A POLISH-AMERICAN HERO STAMP

WHEREAS, There are many heroic Polish-Americans who should be recognized on the United States Postage Stamp; and

WHEREAS, Matt Louis Urban is one of those heroes. Lt. Col. Matt Louis Urban, who died in 1995, was the most decorated World War II Combat Infantry Officer; however, Urban did not receive his Congressional Medal of Honor until many years later when President Jimmy Carter discovered the extent of his service; and

WHEREAS, The Germans nicknamed Urban ,"The Ghost," for dodging weapon fire, and grudgingly admired his leadership skills, knowing he was a Polish-American whom the Nazis considered Untermenschen or "Inferior People." He earned 29 medals for bravery after fighting with distinction in North Africa, Sicily, France, Belgium, and Germany; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations hereby memorializes Congress to require the U.S. Postal Service to affix on a postage stamp, by the year 2005, this documented hero's face; and be it further

RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to the members of the Rhode Island Delegation in the Congress of the United States.
