S  E  N  A  T  E     R  E  S  O  L  U  T  I  O  N

RESPECTFULLY URGING THE GOVERNOR TO FUND THE PUBLIC SERVICE JOBS INITIATIVE

WHEREAS, The State of Rhode Island should be offering leadership to the private sector in Rhode Island in hiring single parents on welfare (TANF), long term unemployed and temporary workers; and

WHEREAS, The current jobs being offered by the state and private sector to persons on TANF are in no way sufficient to lift Rhode Island families out of poverty; and

WHEREAS, The George Wiley Center, the Campaign to Eliminate Childhood Poverty, Providence Head Start, South Providence Neighborhood Ministries and United Temporary Workers have challenged the Department of Administration and Governor Almond to initiate a public service jobs program; now, therefore be it

RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations hereby respectfully urge Governor Lincoln C. Almond to fund the Public Service Jobs Initiative presented to the Governor and legislative leaders by previously mentioned community groups in order to hire outreach workers in the fields of nutrition, energy, education and transportation, so that millions of federal dollars will be brought into Rhode Island and needy Rhode Islanders will receive family wage jobs with proper benefits; and be it further

RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Governor Lincoln C. Almond.
