S  E  N  A  T  E     R  E  S  O  L  U  T  I  O  N

REQUESTING THE 106TH CONGRESS OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA TO PASS S 707 ENTITLED AN ACT TO AMEND THE OLDER AMERICANS ACT OF 1965

WHEREAS, Over five million Americans have significant limitations due to illness or disability and require long-term care; and

WHEREAS, About 85 percent of older persons with disabilities live at home and the majority of these individuals receive assistance with their daily functioning from family and friends, and

WHEREAS, The value of care-giving for families is estimated to be $4,800 to $10,400 annually per caregiver; and

WHEREAS, There is no federal program to support family caregivers; and

WHEREAS, About only 1.5 percent of all Americans have private long-term care insurance; and

WHEREAS, Proposed federal legislation would provide relief to the more than seven million family caregivers who have dedicated their time and efforts so that the long-term care needs of our most vulnerable population could be met; now, therefore be it

RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations hereby requests that the 106th Congress of the United States of America passes S. 707 entitled, An Act to Amend the Older Americans Act of 1965 to establish a national family caregiver support program, and for other purposes; and be it further

RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he is hereby authorized and directed to

transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to the Rhode Island Congressional Delegation to the United States Congress.
