H  O  U  S  E     R  E  S  O  L  U  T  I  O  N

PROCLAIMING MAY 1 TO MAY 7, 2000 "ARSON AWARENESS WEEK"

Introduced By:  Representatives Menard, Martineau, Henseler, Ginaitt and Barr Date Introduced:  April 26, 2000

WHEREAS, Arson is a serious crime that affects all people of every community and can only be stopped when citizens realize the toll arson takes on communities; and

WHEREAS, Arson is a serious national problem causing 95,000 fires, over 700 deaths and $2,000,000,000 in property damage each year; and

WHEREAS, Over half of the arsons in the country are caused by juveniles and young children; and

WHEREAS, Nearly half of these children are under age 15 and the crime of arson has the highest rate of juvenile involvement; and

WHEREAS, The State of Rhode Island is ranked fourth in the nation for juvenile arson arrests; and

WHEREAS, If left untreated, there is an eighty-five percent chance that these children will continue to light fires; and be it further

RESOLVED, The support and promotion of National Arson Awareness Week will honor all that is best within humanity by focusing our combined efforts of the Rhode Island Fire Marshal's Office, The Rhode Island Chapter of The International Association of Arson Investigators, and The Juvenile Firesetter Intervention Coalition of Rhode Island to build a community solution to ameliorate this problem; now, therefore be it

RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations does hereby proclaim May 1 to May 7, 2000 to be "Arson Awareness
