S  E  N  A  T  E     R  E  S  O  L  U  T  I  O  N

PROCLAIMING MAY 14-20, 2000 AS "NATIONAL POLICE WEEK" AND MAY 15, 2000 AS "NATIONAL POLICE MEMORIAL DAY"

Introduced By:  Senators Damiani, Kells and Tocco

WHEREAS, The freedoms that all Americans cherish and count on are protected every day by dedicated and devoted police officers who often risk their lives protecting the safety of our nation's citizens; and

WHEREAS, We especially thank those officers who have perished in the line of duty protecting our liberties and, quite often, giving their lives to save the life of another; and

WHEREAS, One police officer is killed somewhere in the United States every 52 hours, with an average of 166 law enforcement fatalities each year for the past 10 years. In 1999, there were 144 police deaths nationwide and approximately 45 have been reported thus far in 2000; and

WHEREAS, Today and everyday, thousands of courageous and caring police officers put their lives on the line protecting the public from harm; now, therefore be it

RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations hereby thank all of our police officers for all they do every day to protect the public and safeguard our liberties. We hereby proclaim May 14-20, 2000 to be "National Police Week" and May 15, 2000 to be "National Police Memorial Day" in the State of Rhode Island; and be it further

RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to the Rhode Island State Lodge Fraternal Order of Police, the International Brotherhood of Police Officers and the Rhode Island State Troopers

Association.
