S  E  N  A  T  E     R  E  S  O  L  U  T  I  O  N

PROCLAIMING JUNE 3 - 12, 2000 AS "NAVY DAYS 2000 CELEBRATION"

WHEREAS, The Rhode Island Navy was signed into existence by an act of the General Assembly of the Crown Colony of Rhode Island on 12 June 1775 at the Kent County Court House in East Greenwich; and

WHEREAS, The Rhode Island Navy was the first formal Navy in the Western Hemisphere and, with its subsequent integration into the fledging American Navy, can rightly be termed the forerunner of the American Navy; and

WHEREAS, The local John Peck Rathbun Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution have long kept the memory of the Rhode Island Navy and its creation alive through an annual memorial ceremony on the site of the original Kent County Courthouse; and

WHEREAS, In June 2000, on the 225th anniversary of the creation of the Rhode Island Navy, the East Greenwich Navy Days Celebration has evolved into a superbly entertaining, historical, cultural, and educational celebration of events honoring the rich Revolutionary War-era heritage and maritime traditions of the Town of East Greenwich and the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations; now, therefore be it

RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations hereby proclaims June 3 -12, 2000 as "Navy Days 2000 Celebration" in the State of Rhode Island.
