S  E  N  A  T  E     R  E  S  O  L  U  T  I  O  N

CALLING UPON ALL RHODE ISLAND COMMUNITIES TO JOIN IN THE PROMOTION OF PROJECT HOMESAFE

Introduced By:  Senators Cote, Celona, Tocco, Irons and Graziano Date Introduced:  June 20, 2000

WHEREAS, More than 400 cities and counties have signed on to become partners with Project Homesafe, the nation's most comprehensive and far-reaching firearms safety education program. The program was developed by the National Shooting Sports Foundation to encourage the safe handling and secure storage of firearms; and

WHEREAS, The program was enthusiastically adopted by Las Vegas, Oakland, Orlando, Pittsburgh and Augusta, Ga., and unveiled at press conferences well attended by the media in each city. Mayors and law enforcement officials lauded the safety initiative as an effective way to reduce unintentional firearms related injuries or deaths among citizens; and

WHEREAS, Communities that apply for participation in Project Homesafe receive free kits containing a firearm safety curriculum, a gun lock and an instruction sheet for distribution to all gun owners; and

WHEREAS, Supporting Project Homesafe is a strong proactive measure in accordance with already existing legislation; and

WHEREAS, The philosophy of Project Homesafe is one of expanding their efforts to include not only their traditional customers, but also firearms owners-individuals who may not have been exposed to safety education through traditional channels; now, therefore be it

RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations hereby supports Project Homesafe and calls upon all Rhode Island Communities to join in the

promotion of Project Homesafe.
