S  E  N  A  T  E     R  E  S  O  L  U  T  I  O  N

RESPECTFULLY REQUESTING THE DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT AND THE DIVISION OF MOTOR VEHICLES TO INVESTIGATE RHODE ISLAND AUTHORIZED INSPECTION REPAIR STATIONS' CLAIMS

RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations hereby respectfully requests the Department of Environmental Management (DEM) and the Division of Motor Vehicles (DMV) to investigate Rhode Island Authorized Inspection Repair Stations' (AIRS) claims that inspection equipment costs were to be included in the equipment component of the inspection fee, when in fact the stations are paying a portion of the equipment costs, and the time involved for emissions and safety inspections would not exceed 25 minutes when in fact these inspections do exceed 25 minutes. In addition, AIRS claims that said inspection program has an adverse economic impact on inspection stations; and be it further

RESOLVED, That DEM and DMV shall include public hearings as part of their investigation, and shall report their findings to this Senate on January 2, 2001; and be it further

RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to the directors of the Department of Environmental Management and the Division of Motor Vehicles.
