H O U S E R E S O L U T I O N
PROCLAIMING MARCH, 2001 AS "MENTAL RETARDATION AWARENESS MONTH"
IN THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND
WHEREAS, Mental retardation is a condition which affects more than 7,000,000 individuals and their families in the United States; and
WHEREAS, Public awareness and education improve the community's understanding of the important issues affecting people with mental retardation; and
WHEREAS, People with mental retardation can be vital and spirited members of our communities, improving the quality of life for all of us; and
WHEREAS, The month of March has been designated National Mental Retardation Awareness Month; and
WHEREAS, With more than 120,000 members and 1,000 chapters, The Arc of Northern Rhode Island will be undertaking public awareness, education and fundraising initiatives during March, 2001; and
WHEREAS, The Arc of the United States is the nation's leading volunteer-based organization advocating for and with people with mental retardation and related developmental disabilities and their families; now therefore be it
RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations hereby proclaim March, 2001 as "Mental Retardation Awareness Month" in the State of Rhode Island and urges that the citizens of Rhode Island give full support of efforts towards enabling people with mental retardation to live full and productive lives of inclusion in our communities; and be it further
RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to The Arc of Northern Rhode Island.
