RECOGNIZING NATIONAL MINORITY CANCER AWARENESS WEEK FROM APRIL 15-21, 2001

WHEREAS, This year marks the 15th annual National Minority Cancer Awareness Week; and

WHEREAS, National Minority Cancer Awareness Week is a national campaign initiated by the sponsors of the Biennial Symposium on Minorities and the Medically Underserved in 1986 to highlight and bring attention to the needs of special populations; and

WHEREAS, The American Cancer Society, along with health care providers, community organizations and state and local agencies, recognize this week as an opportunity for heightening awareness of the unequal cancer burden for ethnic and medically underserved populations; and

WHEREAS, This celebration supports the American Cancer Society principle, "By 2015: Eliminate the disparities in cancer burdens among population groups by reducing age-adjusted cancer incidence and mortality rates and improving quality of life in the poor and underserved"; now therefore be it

RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations hereby recognizes National Minority Cancer Awareness Week from April 15-21; and be it further

RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he is hereby authorized and directed to transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to the Rhode Island Cancer Society.
