H O U S E R E S O L U T I O N
PROCLAIMING JUNE 1, 2001 AS "AZORES DAY" IN THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND
WHEREAS, Currently in the State of Rhode Island there are approximately 100,000 people that are immigrants and descendants of Portugal and the Azores. People of Portuguese heritage comprise approximately 8% of the population in Rhode Island; and
WHEREAS, Portuguese immigrants began arriving in Rhode Island in the 1840's. These hard working and industrious folks quickly took up work in fishing and the textile factories; and
WHEREAS, Immigrants to this nation from the Azores and Portugal have added so much to our nation and state. From business and commerce to education and government, the descendants of the Azores have both prospered and added much to the vibrancy of our state, economy, and neighborhoods; now, therefore, be it
RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations hereby proclaims June 1, 2001 to be "Azores Day" in the State of Rhode Island; and be it further
RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to President Carlos Cesar.
