COMMEMORATING THE 10TH ANNIVERSARY OF GIRLS AND BOYS TOWN OF NEW ENGLAND

Introduced By:  Senators Polisena, Graziano, Damiani, Igliozzi and Tassoni Date Introduced:   June 7, 2001

WHEREAS, Father Flanagan took five boys under his wing back in 1917 and ever since, the Boys & Girls Town has been dedicated to caring for and educating youth who are homeless, abandoned, neglected, delinquent or underprivileged; and

WHEREAS, Thanks to many avid supporters, Father Flanagan's dream has manifested into the fullness it is today. Some well known supporters include the 1938 Oscar award-winning movie star Mickey Rooney and Spencer Tracey. These actors and many others from various walks of life saw the Boys and Girls Town as a cutting-edge program reaching out and successfully helping troubled youth turn his/her life around to face a more positive future; and

WHEREAS, The insight this one man had back in 1917 could not apply more appropriately to today's society; and

WHEREAS, The New England branch opened its doors in 1991 as part of Father Flanagan's Boys' Home, the world famous organization based in Boys Town, Nebraska; and

WHEREAS, In 10 short years after the New England branch opened, it has served more than 854 children and 246 families, who were at imminent risk of having children removed from their home; and

WHEREAS, One of the most significant services the Boys and Girls Town of New England has offered is the training they provide to parents, educators, child-care professionals and juvenile justice officials in child-care technologies; now, therefore be it

RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations hereby congratulates the Girls and Boys Town of New England with sheer joy and excitement on the occasion of its 10th Anniversary of outstanding commitment to its members by promoting growth, education, support and overall good health; and be it further

RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he is hereby authorized and directed to transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to William Reardon, Site Manager of the Girls and Boys Town of New England.
