PROCLAIMING JUNE 1, 2001 AS "SPECIAL OLYMPICS DAY" IN THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND

WHEREAS, June 1, 2001 is recognized as "Special Olympics Day"; and

WHEREAS, In 1976, the Special Olympics of Rhode Island became a separate entity as a chapter of Special Olympics International. In 1978, they were incorporated under the direction of a part-time Executive Director; and

WHEREAS, There are more than 2,200 children and adults with disabilities participating in the Rhode Island Special Olympics today; and

WHEREAS, Between 250-350 Rhode Island police, fire and correctional officers participate in the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics. The run began in Woonsocket at 11:00 a.m. and continued through Cumberland, Central Falls, Pawtucket, Providence, North Providence, Johnston, Smithfield, Cranston, Warwick, East Greenwich, North Kingstown, Westerly, Charlestown, South Kingstown and into URI's Meade Stadium at approximately 8:20 p.m. to light the cauldron signifying the start of the State Summer Games; and

WHEREAS, The police, fire and correctional officers have been preparing for several months to ensure the success of the Special Olympics Torch Run. In order for this run to be recognized and honored for its hard work and success, it only seems right we proclaim June 1, 2001 as "Special Olympics Day" in the State of Rhode Island; now, therefore be it

RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations hereby congratulates all this year's athletes and wish them success; and be it further

RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he is hereby authorized and directed to transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Special Olympics Rhode Island.
