J  O  I  N  T     R  E  S  O  L  U  T  I  O  N

REQUESTING THE RHODE ISLAND DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH TO PROMOTE ANNUAL CHECK-UPS AND SCREENING FOR PROSTATE AND COLORECTAL CANCER

WHEREAS, Cancer costs Rhode Island more than four hundred and fifty million dollars ($450,000,000) each year; and

WHEREAS, Rhode Island ranks 24th highest overall in cancer mortality rates among the fifty states and Washington, D.C.; and

WHEREAS, The American Cancer Society estimates that 800 new cases of prostate cancer will be diagnosed among men in Rhode Island and that one hundred men will die; and

WHEREAS, Six hundred new cases of colorectal cancer will be diagnosed among men and women in Rhode Island and 300 men and women will die of this disease; and

WHEREAS, Early diagnosis of these cancers assures 90-100 percent recovery according to statistics; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this General Assembly of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations hereby requests that the Department of Health in conjunction with the Rhode Island Cancer Council and the American Cancer Society develop a program to raise public awareness of prostate and colorectal cancer and the importance of early detection; and be it further

RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he is hereby authorized and directed to transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to the Director of the Rhode Island Department of Health.
