H  O  U  S  E     R  E  S  O  L  U  T  I  O  N

RESPECTFULLY REQUESTING THE DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT TO PURCHASE NEW AND INNOVATIVE MOSQUITO CONTROL DEVICES

WHEREAS, Mosquito borne diseases, such as West Nile Virus and EEE, are of critical concern to the health and safety of all Rhode Islanders; and

WHEREAS, Because of their weakened immune systems, children and the elderly are most susceptible to contracting these mosquito borne viruses; and

WHEREAS, More than a dozen birds in the Northeast have already tested positive this year for the West Nile Virus, including two in Rhode Island; and

WHEREAS, It is the declared policy of the State of Rhode Island that the use of pesticides must be minimized, as unwarranted and sometimes excessive spraying can irreversibly harm the environment; now, therefore be it

RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations hereby respectfully requests the Department of Environmental Management to purchase fifty new and innovative mosquito control devices; and be it further

RESOLVED, That the Department of Environmental Management make available the mosquito control devices to the cities and towns of the State of Rhode Island, to be loaned to the cities and towns for use at public events within each municipality; and be it further

RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he is hereby authorized and directed to transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to the Director of the Department of Environmental Management.
