RESPECTFULLY REQUESTING PRESIDENT GEORGE W. BUSH TO NOT ALLOW DRILLING FOR NATURAL GAS IN COASTAL AREAS SUCH AS GEORGES BANK

Introduced By:  Representatives Naughton, Lowe, M. Anderson, Kennedy and Lally Date Introduced:   June 27, 2001

WHEREAS, For 20 years Congress, through passing one year moratoriums, has banned drilling within 200 miles of the Atlantic and Pacific coasts; and

WHEREAS, Georges Bank, which is roughly 185 miles by 90 miles and runs between Cape Cod and Nova Scotia is considered to be one of the premiere fishing areas in world; and

WHEREAS, In the last 20 years the supply of fish in Georges Bank has made a tremendous comeback. Allowing drilling would cause serious harm to the fisheries industry and the tourism industry in New England; and

WHEREAS, Georges Bank is a beautiful natural resource and should be protected as such to the fullest possible extent; now, therefore, be it

RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations hereby respectfully requests that President Bush not allow drilling in Georges Bank; and be it further

RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to transmit a duly certified copy of this Resolution to the President of the United States, the Chairman of the United States Senate Environmental Committee and the Chairman of the United States House of Representatives Environmental Committee.
