WHEREAS, On the evening of June 9, 1772, a party of Rhode Island patriots in eight longboats captured and burned the British Revenue Schooner H.M.S. Gaspee at anchor off of Namquit Point in Warwick, Rhode Island; and

WHEREAS, The burning of the H.M.S. Gaspee was a primary reason that the American Colonies organized the Committee of Correspondence that eventually lead to the Continental Congress and the Declaration of Independence; and

WHEREAS, The 1995 Rhode Island General Assembly enacted legislation which set aside the second Saturday and the following Sunday of June in each and every year as days to be known as "GASPEE DAYS"; now, therefore be it

RESOLVED, That the Rhode Island General Assembly respectfully requests that the United States House of Representatives memorialize the State of Rhode Island's first annual statewide recognition of the Gaspee Days celebration; and be it further

RESOLVED, That the secretary of state be and he hereby is authorized and directed to transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to the Rhode Island delegation in the United States House of Representatives.
