S E N A T E    R E S O L U T I O N

RESPECTFULLY REQUESTING THE COMMISSIONER OF EDUCATION TO DEVELOP A POLICY AND PROCEDURE FOR SCHOOL COMMITTEES REGARDING DISCIPLINARY ACTIONS

RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations hereby respectfully requests the Commissioner of Education to study and develop a policy and procedure permitting school committees to recover costs and expenses from parents and/or guardians of students who are excluded from regular classroom instruction for ten or more days as a result of disciplinary action; and be it further

RESOLVED, That such recovery shall not apply to special needs students as defined by the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act whose exclusionary conduct is related to such disability; and be it further

RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to transmit a duly certified copy of this Resolution to Peter McWalters, Commissioner of Education.
