S E N A T E    R E S O L U T I O N

CELEBRATING MAY AS OLDER AMERICANS MONTH

WHEREAS, In 1963, President John F. Kennedy first designated the month of May to honor older Americans; and

WHEREAS, We have celebrated and recognized the contributions of elders to our society each year since then; and

WHEREAS, Rhode Island has 150,000 citizens age 65 and over, the third highest proportion of persons in the country in this age group; and

WHEREAS, Rhode Island elder citizens have made invaluable contributions to the state's culture, prosperity and quality of life during their lifetimes; and

WHEREAS, The theme for this year's Older Americans Month is "Living Longer, Growing Stronger in America"; and

WHEREAS, The Rhode Island Department of Elderly Affairs and its aging network agencies are committed to providing programs and services to help the state's elders enjoy dignity, independence and good health in their elder years; now, therefore be it

RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations joins with states across the nation in celebrating May as Older Americans Month, in saluting older Rhode Islanders for their outstanding achievements and contributions to the state, and in recognizing the work of the aging network in improving the quality of life for Rhode Island elders; and be it further

RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he is hereby authorized and directed to transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Director of Elderly Affairs, Barbara Raynor.
