S E N A T E    R E S O L U T I O N

CONGRATULATING STEVEN MCLAUGHLIN ON ATTAINING THE RANK OF EAGLE SCOUT

WHEREAS, In a society that grows increasingly fragmented and fractious, and all too often tempts its youth to selfish and unwise decisions, it is a very special young man who chooses to dedicate himself to the service of others by putting into practice the noble ideals of the Scout Oath and Scout Law. Steven McLaughlin is just such a first-rate youth, and his accomplishments are truly deserving of our recognition; and

WHEREAS, Steven, the son of Edward and Marie McLaughlin of Lutherville, Maryland joined Troop 2 in Woonsocket on June 30, 1992; and

WHEREAS, Steven rapidly worked his way up through the ranks of Scout, Tenderfoot, Second Class, and First Class by 1993. A year later, Steven attained the rank of Star and in 1995 qualified as a Life Scout; and

WHEREAS, Facing the journey of the "Trail to Eagle", Steven served as Patrol Leader and Troop Scribe, earned the required 12 merit badges (Swimming, Lifesaving, Camping, Citizenship in the Community, Safety, Environmental Science, Citizenship in the Nation, Family Life, Citizenship in the World, Communications, Personal Management, and First Aid) as well as 19 additional merit badges, including Fishing, Leatherwork, Archery, Metalwork, Canoeing, Small Boat Sailing, Sports, Nature, Railroading, Backpacking, Fish and Wildlife, Soil and Water Conservation, Wood Caring, Basketry, Wilderness Survival, Forestry, Mammal Study, Pioneering, and Rowing; and

WHEREAS, He also received the Ad Altare Dei religious award, BSA Lifeguard certification, completed the 50 mile hike and received the Philmont Arrow. His Eagle project involved planting of trees and shrubs, construction of bird houses, and overall beautification of the Bucklin Facility in Pawtucket; now, therefore be it

RESOLVED, That this Senate of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations hereby honors Steven McLaughlin for all he has done to attain the rank of Eagle Scout. Convinced that Steven's distinguished career in Scouting will prepare him for a life replete with accomplishments and success, the membership is likewise, certain that he will continue to dedicate a large part of that life to the service of others; and, be it further

RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he is hereby authorized and directed to transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Steven McLaughlin.
