H O U S E     R E S O LU T I O N

PROCLAIMING APRIL 11, 1999 AS COLONEL CHARLES T. KNOWLES DAY

WHEREAS, On June 13, 1971, Charles Timothy Knowles, upon graduation from the University of Rhode Island, began military service as a Second Lieutenant of Infantry and held positions as platoon leader and company executive officer with the 173rd Airborne Brigade and the 101st Airborne Division. In August 1974, he joined the Rhode Island Army National Guard and assigned as Air Operations Officer, HHD 6th Special Forces Battalion, 20th Special Forces Group, RIARNG. He has served in many positions to include: Detachment Commander; Intelligence Officer, HQ STARC; Personnel Officer, Troop Command; Operations Officer, 56th Troop Command; Inspector General, HQ STARC. His military awards and decorations include: the Meritorious Service Medal; the Army Commendation Medal; the Army Achievement Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster; the National Defense Service Medal with Bronze Star; the Special Forces Tab; Master Parachutist's Badge; Pathfinder Badge; and Korean and British Parachutist Badges. He was promoted to Colonel on June 13, 1996 and on January 4, 1997, Colonel Knowles assumed Brigade Command of the 56th Troop Command; and

WHEREAS, Colonel Charles T. Knowles graduated cum laude from New England School of Law in 1977. He was chairman of the Rhode Island House Judiciary Committee, a member of the National Guard Association of Rhode Island, the American Legion, International Lions, Save the Bay, Common Cause and has been named to the Who's Who in America; and

WHEREAS, Colonel Knowles will retire after 28 years of military service. Colonel Knowles served his nation and the Rhode Island Army National Guard with distinction and courage; now therefore be it

RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations hereby proclaims April 11, 1999 as Colonel Charles T. Knowles Day in Rhode Island and encourage all of its citizens to join in recognizing him for his contributions to the Rhode Island Army National Guard; and be it further

RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he is hereby authorized and directed to transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to Colonel Charles T. Knowles.
