WHEREAS, Quebecor Printing Federated has ceased operation at its 369 Prairie Avenue, Providence plant; and
WHEREAS, While at this site, the business used and/or stored an assortment of chemicals related to its printing operation, such as benzol lithotine, cyanine, Lith-kem-co, Film Kleen and alcohol, among other photographic and printing solutions; and
WHEREAS, Individuals residing near the former plant, and those familiar with its operation have expressed concern that some of these chemicals may have seeped into the soil; and
WHEREAS, Problems with closed sites with histories of chemical storage and use is an important one; now, therefore be it
RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations hereby respectfully requests the Department of Environmental Management to produce a report describing its investigation into the potential toxicity of these particular chemicals and/or any other chemicals found; and be it further
RESOLVED, That the Department of Environmental Management report its findings and recommendations to the House of Representatives and the Health Department within 45 days; and be it further
RESOLVED, That the Department of Environmental Management report its progress at a public community forum; and be it further
RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to the Director of the Department of Environmental Management.
