H O U S E   R E S O L U T I O N

PROCLAIMING NOVEMBER, 1999 AS PANCREATIC CANCER AWARENESS MONTH IN THE STATE OF RHODE ISLAND

WHEREAS, The good health and well-being of the residents of Rhode Island are enhanced as a direct result of efforts to spread awareness about pancreatic cancer and to increase research into finding better methods of early detection, causes and effective treatments for this disease; and

WHEREAS, Pancreatic cancer is the 4th largest cancer killer of both men and women in the United States having a 99% mortality rate, yet receiving little to no attention; and

WHEREAS, This year alone 29,000 people will be diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and pancreatic cancer research is in desperate need of funds, currently receiving only $491 per fatality per year, compared to $9800 a year for breast cancer research and $38,000 a year for AIDS research; and

WHEREAS, Rhode Island, proud home to many fine medical institutions, is pleased to join in recognizing and applauding the valuable role which families and advocates of pancreatic cancer victims play in helping our medical community to advance the fight against this disease; and

WHEREAS, It is essential that we work together as a people and as a state to support efforts to find ways to attack this deadly disease; now, therefore be it

RESOLVED, That this House of Representatives of the State of Rhode Island, do hereby proclaim November, 1999 as PANCREATIC CANCER AWARENESS MONTH, and do commend this observance to all of our citizens; and be it further

RESOLVED, That the Secretary of State be and he hereby is authorized and directed to transmit duly certified copies of this resolution to the Pancreatic Cancer Action Network (PanCan).
