WHEREAS, The Ox Bow Apartment Complex houses approximately 709 residents, of whom 60 are elderly and 20 are people with varying disabilities. Many of these elderly and disabled do not have transportation and must walk to Stop and Shop to do their shopping; and
WHEREAS, Currently the area from Ox Bow to Stop and Shop is unpaved. Residents must walk on a pathway that is uneven, narrow and often unsafe because of the footing. In the past people have fallen because the ground is so uneven. Across the street, where there are few business's there is a paved sidewalk; and
WHEREAS, In addition to the many elderly and others who use the area to walk to Stop and Shop there is also a question of safety for our youth. Many of the youth in this complex work at Stop and Shop as a primary place of after school employment and it is difficult for them to get back and forth to work, especially when the ground is full of snow and ice; now therefore be it
RESOLVED, That this Senate and House of Representatives of the state of Rhode Island and Providence Plantations hereby respectfully requests the director of the department of transportation to add to his public works program the installation of a sidewalk, approximately 4 tenths of a mile, from the beginning of the Ox Bow Apartments to the Stop and Shop complex on West Main Road in the town of Middletown; and be it further
RESOLVED, That the secretary of the state be and he hereby is authorized and directed to transmit a duly certified copy of this resolution to the director of the department of transportation.
