	RELATING TO COURTS AND CIVIL PROCEDURE--COURTS -- JUDICIAL SELECTION

	It is enacted by the General Assembly as follows:
1	SECTION 1. Chapter 8-16.1 of the General Laws entitled "Judicial Selection" is hereby
2	amended by adding thereto the following section:
3	8-16.1-8. Replacement judges.
4	Notwithstanding any provisions of this chapter to the contrary, whenever a judge from
5	the superior court, family court, district court, traffic tribunal, workers' compensation court or
6	municipal court who is a person of color leaves the bench, for whatever reason, their replacement
7	must be a person of color, so as not to diminish the number of judges of color in that court.
8	SECTION 2. This act shall take effect upon passage.

	BY THE LEGISLATIVE COUNCIL

1	This act would require that when a judge of color on a state or municipal court leaves the
2	bench, they would be replaced by a person of color.
