MEDIA ADVISORY: Senate Judiciary schedules hearing on same-sex marriage bills for Thursday
STATE HOUSE – The Senate Committee on Judiciary has hearings on two same-sex marriage bills slated for Thursday, March 21, at the Rise of the Senate (approximately 4:30 p.m.) in Room 313 at the State House:
• (2013-S 0038) – Sponsored by Sen. Donna M. Nesselbush (D-Dist. 15, Pawtucket, North Providence), this bill would change terminology on marrying from gender-based to non-gender-based. It also redefines the term “marriage” and addresses prohibitions to marriage, state and federal law recognition, applicability in the state of Rhode Island, marriage licenses, protection of freedom of religion in marriages and the merger of civil unions into marriages. • (2013-S 0708) – Sponsored by Sen. Frank A. Ciccone III (D-Dist. 7, Providence, North Providence), this joint resolution would call for a ballot question about the allowance of same-sex marriage with the right of religious people, organizations or institutions to choose not to officiate or provide marriage-related services to same-sex couples.
